Mouth cancer screening appointments: what to expect

We will perform a visual examination, looking in your nose and oral cavity to check for any lumps, lesions or ulcers in the mouth and neck, that could present a risk. Even if you have only very small lumps in your mouth, or you can’t see anything you think is a cause for concern at home, it’s still vital that you come in and see us at least once a year. We will be able to examine parts of the mouth you can’t see looking in the mirror at home.

Other signs we will look for include:

• Red, white or mixed red and white patches on the side of your tongue and gums.
• Ulcers that persist for more than three weeks
• Teeth that become loose in the apparent absence of gum disease.
• Unusual-looking lesions.
